via Warren Ellis, so some of you will have seen this already..

But, giant military hovercraft!



Loaded out with firepower that seems to put it about on par with a frigate, capable of carrying infantry and tanks, and, on sufficiently flat terrain, carrying them a reasonable distance inland. Imagine an Operation Overlord scale landing equipped with these..

The reasons they ain't that heavily used are that
  1. They're damned expensive and fuel inefficient in comparison to a normal landing ship.
  2. They're just about useless in an opposed landing. All ya gotta do to bugger it up is cause the skirt to lift or the hull to nose down a bit, get a lump of metal in the fan blades, and "boom" it self destructs.
Still, they are the nearest thing we have to a Hammer's Slammers tank!

The old SPI Invasion America game did exactly that. The Europeans had hovercraft units that could move across lake/ocean hexes, which made it really easy to outflank those damn Yankees.
