Brains and Coffee

So, I keep thinking it would be neat to have a regular brains and coffee night.

The idea is that a bunch of relatively learned, not too egotistic, but still opinionated people get together and discuss some topic to a depth a little beyond that reached in normal social discourse. I've read, mostly in blogs, about this sort of thing in all sorts of forms, but outside of technical interest groups and other more specialized forms, I haven't come across anything much like this in Christchurch.

Here's my motivation: I frequently encounter ideas, articles or books that I'd love to talk over and think about in a bit more detail, but very rarely do I get that opportunity, except, perhaps, when they're coincidentally relevant to something else I end up talking about. It's not to say that I don't get this sort of opportunity sometimes, so much as that I have little control over when it happens, and I'd like more of it in my life. I can read and think alone to my heart's content, but one's thoughts are not truly tempered until they are tested in argument.

I have ulterior motives, of course - one thing I'd love to experiment with is brainstorming ideas about the future; for example, ethics, current affairs, social evolution, and, yes, even technology.

Who'd be interested in this sort of thing? There's not a lot in the way of pre-requisites other than a desire for coffee and good conversation. Topics are hardly difficult to come by - at minimum I end each week with a long list of things I want to have a yarn about.

Assuming I get at least a couple of interested folk, I'll arrange something for next week, probably on Tuesday or Thursday night. If you're keen, let me know which is preferable. Finally, if you've got any suggestions of a good cafe in Riccarton, let me know that, too - the key criteria is that they not have loud background music.

I'd be keen, but obviously it's not possible for me to attend. Although I'd be rooting for a nice cup of tea rather than coffee. I'd love to be able to discuss some of the books I read. At the moment I'm reading Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls". I'd love to talk about the ethics of armed resistance and the line between freedom fighter and terrorist.

There's even the perfect cafe here in Greymouth for the meetup - the Bonzai. Sigh...

Well, that is a problem, isn't it.

That said, I _have_ been saying it'd be nice to do a road trip out to see you guys.. Maybe I should try piling some people into my car for a weekend..

That's a great idea. There's certainly some lovely walks around here that people might want to do together during the day. There's also Cobden Cave to explore provided you all have strong footwear and reliable torches. Not forgetting the Blackball Salami Company, yum! If people want to get muddy there's On Yer Bike, these guys have just bought a Hagglund too.

If plenty of people were coming then we couldn't put them all up, but there's loads of backpackers, motels and hotels here. For example...

Well, I've started mentioning this to a couple of people - the main concern is the roads getting there, given that winter is almost upon us..

I'll keep bugging people, though, and see how much interest I can drum up..

Don't worry dude! Once I'm a student I can resume my own noternal lifestyle. Then WE can have our OWN interlectual get togethers with hookers and blackjack! infact, forget the interlectual disscussion!

Used to be the way my family would spend evenings. 8) One of the main problems here is when there is a significant disparity in background knowledge between participants - you end up having to do a lot of knowledge transfer in the process. And, people being people, you sometimes end up with way too much emotional investment floating around.

You're right about the knowledge transfer problem. However, in my experience, it's less a problem if you're talking about philosophy & the humanities than it is for science & technical topics.

YMMV, of course, but hey, explaining things is often part of the fun. There's a reason I said _reasonably_ learned - I don't particularly want to participate in the fights that so often arise over the size of one's, umm, expertise. That's just boring (and, incidentally, something I want to avoid - I'm sick of apparently intellectual conversations that are really just an exercise in social posturing).

LOVE the idea. Would certainly attempt to attend on the odd occasion.
My suggestion would be to have it at a flat rather than a coffee house?
There are plenty of people that can brew decent turkish style coffee (a la Mong!) and it would work out cheaper and perhaps more relaxed?
My suggestion in past years would be a gathering around the huge coffee table at the Y, but I am sure there are many other decent venues.
Coffee houses may well work fine, but generally I find places like that tend to have too much background noise/music for me to 100% focus on a conversation.
There's my 5c
:) xx

Well, I'm being very deliberate in not having it in someone's lounge - I think that increases the tendency for things to disintegrate into general chat sessions.

Noise, obviously, is a concern, but I'm happy to look about for a while. And Dillon's suggestion below is very good..

Also, Turkish coffee - mmmm.

I'd suggest that to avoid the 'disintegrating into a general chat session' problem (and facilitate any potential podcasting) establishing some at least semi-formal moderation/chairing of the proceedings early in the proceedings (before any countervailing culture has a chance to emerge).

Holding it somewhere with net connectivity would also be good (to allow for on-the-spot fact checking.

Shoei and I belong to the Catholic Family Movement, we get together once a month to talk about Catholic stuff, we rotate who hosts and they put on a simple supper for afterwards. The hosting person/people pick a topic to talk about and normally provide something to read on that topic and some questions which we answer verbally. It works well, and there is chat, but we also get down to business.

It's a couple of hours and the format is pretty reliable because we all know that we're there to discuss the topic.

Interestingly, people seem to have quite a diverse range of expectations for get-togethers like this; given that, it's probably worth experimenting with hosting it at people's houses..

So, thanks for the $0.05 :)

If you found a nice cafe, and identified a quiet night for it, and then told the manager you could pull in a dozen customers for a couple of hours provided there was no music, I don't think it would take the manager terribly long to pull the plug on the stereo.

Heh. You've spotted one of my secret ulterior motives - I've actually been slowly hammering away at a podcast idea, one part of which was to be a group discussion type thing of salient issues (mostly focusing around ethics, futurism and tech). I've even conducted a couple of interviews in this vein.

The other ulterior motive, of course, is that I figure I'm going to have to find some groups like this when I get to Seattle, and, if I don't, I'm going to have to organise them. Otherwise, well, I'll go batty.

You're echoing another of my secret plans - virtual coffee. Since I'm soon going to be in a situation where 90% of my friends are in a different city, it'd be nice to be able to try out social events using video conferencing and the like.. Even if only for SCIENCE!

well I know skype has a video function and a conference call function, I haven't tried them but they are free and should work.

I have some usb voip handsets and some usb sound cards which you can plug any mic into.

I have some webcams too that are USB, I could figure something out if we had somewhere with a decent net connection.

Skype's video conferencing is limited to 2 people.

If you want to try out more, I suggest you try ooVoo.

That said, I'm not going to worry a lot about video conferencing for the moment - the first step is to run one of these things in real life! ;)

Also, the maths department used to do a thing where someone would give a talk on something not their area of research, with questions after. It's probably a bit more formal than what it sounds like you are after. Just thought I'd mention it. :)

I'm keen. One of the reasons I have a tendency to avoid social gatherings is because of my inability to maintain conversations that are little more than idle chitchat, and if people aren't expecting more than that I tend to scare them away. Tuesday would work better for me, but I could probably make it on Thursday too.
